Pets are a great addition to any family, but they can make it difficult if you have allergies. Instead of forgoing pets entirely, look for hypoallergenic pets, such as the Cockapoo.

The Cockapoo is considered a hypoallergenic dog. Their coat is curly like a Poodle, which means they shed much less than other dogs. This low-shedding hair makes the Cockapoo more suitable for those with allergies, but it’s still important to maintain the dog’s coat.

Although Cockapoos are generally hypoallergenic, there’s no such thing as a completely allergy-free dog. For this reason, it’s important to read on to learn more about Cockapoos and their hypoallergenic natures.

Are Cockapoos Hypoallergenic? Overview

In short, Cockapoos classify as a hypoallergenic dog. They are less likely to irritate your allergies because they shed very little and do not have a strong odor. Their low-shedding nature means you won’t be exposed to the dog particles that cause allergies as often.

That being said, all dogs can trigger allergies, even hypoallergenic ones. In other words, there’s no such thing as a completely hypoallergenic dog. This applies to Cockapoos as well. They are less likely to irritate allergies than other dogs, but they can still do so.

What Does “Hypoallergenic” Mean?

In order to understand why Cockapoos are hypoallergenic and what this means for people with allergies, you have to understand what hypoallergenic means.

Most people assume that it is pet hair that causes allergies. This is not the case. Instead, it is a protein found in dogs’ saliva and dander.

Dogs that shed often are more likely to cause an allergic reaction. The reason for this is that more dander is exposed. With every piece of hair that falls, a little bit of dander is attached. So, dogs that shed a lot are more likely to trigger allergies simply because more dander is lost with the hair.

In comparison, hypoallergenic breeds shed less. This is largely due to their coat types. Curly coats, for example, shed less because the individual hairs are not pulled down as much. Since curly coats shed less, you don’t have to worry about as much dander getting in your home.

All dogs shed to some degree, meaning hypoallergenic dogs can irritate allergies as well. They will be less allergy-inducing than regular breeds, though.

What Does That Mean For You?

Since there is no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic dog, it’s important to truly think about whether you want to risk a dog irritating your allergies. Once you get a dog, it’s your responsibility to care for that creature for the rest of its life.

If you do not have severe health problems, hypoallergenic dogs are a great way to get a pet without triggering your allergies too much. Although the dogs still have the dander, there are things you can do to minimize the allergens even further.

For example, caring for the dog’s coat is a great way to minimize shedding. Additionally, take an allergy pill. Doing these two things in addition to getting a hypoallergenic dog will mean you are not going to experience allergies frequently.

What Makes Cockapoos Hypoallergenic?

Now that we understand what hypoallergenic means, let’s talk about Cockapoos again. Cockapoos are considered hypoallergenic because they are low-shedding. They normally have curly coats. The curly coats do not pull downwards as much, meaning that they shed less than other dogs. This makes them hypoallergenic.

It is the Poodle parent that gives the Cockapoo this hypoallergenic nature. Poodles are considered one of the most popular hypoallergenic dogs. Because the Cockapoo is a mix between the Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, it takes after the Poodle’s curly coat.

Is A Cockapoo Right For Me?

Cockapoos are a great breed for many reasons, but there are some downsides. Most notably, Cockapoos need a lot of exercise and attention. If you do not have the ability or desire to walk this dog frequently, play with it, and be home a lot, this is not the breed for you.

In contrast, Cockapoos are great for families where people are home frequently and always doing something. For example, Cockapoos make a great addition in homes with children who will play with the dog and give it all of the attention it deserves. If that sounds like your family, a Cockapoo may be right for you.

Final Thoughts

Because of the Poodle parentage, Cockapoos are considered hypoallergenic. They shed less than other dogs, which will expose you to less allergy-causing dander.

Remember that there’s no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic dog. Even Cockapoos can trigger allergies because they have the protein allergen in their bodies. Caring for the dog’s coat and taking an allergy pill will further make the dog less irritating.

Before you go adopt A Cockapoo, make sure this breed is right for you. Only get a Cockapoo if you understand no dog is 100% hypoallergenic and if you are willing to shower with the exercise and attention it needs.
